UK/Switzerland Newton mod to a solar gun

Frankenscope? Let's see it!***be advised that NOTHING in this forum has been safety tested and you are reading and using these posts at your own peril. blah, blah, blah... dont mess around with your eyesight when it comes to solar astronomy. Use appropriate filtration at all times...

Hi Mike

good luck with the stripping

Walter+Mark: I also did not spend a huge amount of time on my 5 inch solar Newtonian. But in theory this approach ought to give extremely good results with CaK. It definitely worked well but of course it's difficult to truly compare unless the comparison is side to side, on the same day, etc.

So solar Newtonian plus Quark would be difficult to make work? If the mirror is large enough there really is still quite a bit of light.

By the way, if the mirror is of fairly large diameter (like 8 inch and above), I think it's actually better to do without the diagonal (secondary) mirror and mount the camera (plus any filters) at the top of the open tube. The central obstruction at 8 inch and above will be equal or less and there is greater flexibility in reaching focus.

Hi Douglas

yes you are right, working without the secondary leaves us mor freedom reaching focus. I doubt that the heat load for a Quark is too high, at least when we use only a stripped 8" mirror

It's whether a stripped mirror would leave a quark enough light; the quarks are designed for 100% throughput hitting them, not the 5% reflection of the stripped mirror. I guess it's all good and well me debating the theory, the proof of the pudding would be to try it...
