I'm sorry to hear about the reflection problems. Once more we need a source for bigger payable ERFs.


Only stardust in the wind, some fine and some less fine scopes, filters and adapters as well. Switzerland 47 N, 9 E, in the heart of EUROPE :)

Don't give in yet John. The image is not too bad really.
You could sell the other two anyway and get a 150MM.

Sorry to hear of the difficulties. I think I have a similar problem in my own Frankenscope attempt. I do get details, but they do not snap into focus, and there seems to be a lot of glare. I first thought spherical aberration might be to blame, as the Frankenscope is based on an ST80 combined with a -174mm meniscus lens. This faster set-up could add SA. Stopping down the scope did not change anything, which all but rules out SA. Misalignment could be a problem, but I could not get any setting to work (besides, I spotted a flare on the limb which was showing good detail). I can remove the front ERFof my LS35 to prevent interference with the internal 60mm ERF inside the ST80 tube, but that did not help either. I am not sure if this internal ERF is tilted properly to prevent internal reflections between ERF and objective causing trouble. I will ensure it is tilted next time round, or try the 60mm front mounted. If that fails, I can use the 85mm triband I havefront mounted. If that fails I will give up on this configuration.


Solar kit: GP-C8 with Thousand Oaks Solar filter, APM 80mm F/6, Lunt Herschel Wedge, Solar Spectrum 0.3Å H-alpha filter, Beloptic Tri-Band ERF (80mm free aperture), Thousand Oaks 90mm ERF, Coronado SolarMax II 60mm with Double Stack Unit. Lunt straight B1800 Ca-K module.

Where I was going with this John; if the Lunt PT module was too close to the 127mm lens then you could be getting scattering from the periphery of the Lunt PT unit because the light cone is too large for the aperture of the module, which could be causing the ghosting? When you're running it stepped down to 85mm the light cone would be of smaller diameter and hence possibly not vignetted / scattered (?)

Maybe you could insert a polarized filter between both erf that you turn to minimize the reflection. Photo filters are cheap and should have the right size. Hope they have enough quality.

Make sure it is a circular Polaroid. You will loose light, but it will cancel out the reflection between the two mirrors.
