Is the blocking filter necessary?

Post by NightPhotographer »

Hello

I want to get a Lunt H-Alpha filter for solar imaging. Since I am not going to use my telescope for observing, I'm not sure if I need to buy the blocking filter as well. Is the blocking filter only a safety measure for solar observation?

<name?>,
The H alpha filter system is a combination of an ERF, an etalon and a blocking filter.
It needs all the elements to function. You definitely need both the front Lunt H alpha filter element plus the rear blocking filter for both visual and imaging.

Yes you do need a blocking filter.
