Removing barlow from Quark

Post by sulcis2000 »

Hi

anyone tried to remove internal telecentric barlow from Daystar Quark?

I have a excellent Quark but in the next future I'd like to use it with a DK/Cassegrain F15 so I need a Quark without internal 4,3X barlow for using a 2x telecentric barlow

Tks

Ale

Mine also unscrewed, but it required a bit of force and a "boa wrench", because the thread was sealed with what looked like red locktite.

Tks Frank & Mark. Can you show me a picture of Daystar Quark without barlow?

I think Daystar may have added a screw on newer models. Mine has a bit of give if I try and twist it, but a screw on the back right by the joint seems to prevent the turning.

One question is how much of the blocking filter comes off with the Barlow. If I were Daystar, I would have put the blocking filter before (objective side of) the Barlow so that I could use a smaller one, which would mean it should unscrew with the Barlow.

Anyone with experience with removing the barlow from a more recent Quark, with he screw/bolt on the side? Any issues? If you take the barlow out, does it still have its blocking filter intact? Would really like to know if you can basically take the barlow out and have a quark combo essentially, and then pair it with other options.

?

Very best,

Hi George. The blocking filter is on the end of the telecentric.

Anyone has tried a Coronado BF (BF15 or BF30) instead of the original one of the Quark?

Yes, it works, but must be before the telecentric.

to LTHB

how did you get black main ring off of red etalon body?

I see a funny looking screw that has a pin like center
i assume you need a special hex wrench ?
does it have a name?

thx JP
interesting topic

I'm not quite sure what you mean: two of the four screws (upper left and lower right) on the left hand side of the second picture in my last post? If yes: I didn't remove these screws/the black ring so far, so I cannot really tell if they can be removed without damaging the filter.

However, for unfamiliar (to me) screws I usually check Wikipedia, i.e. here: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der ... pfantriebe

The two screws in the black ring look to me like number 12 from the bottom of the long table (called "Torx Plus mit Stift (5 Point Security)") in the wikipedia entry. This type of screw seems to be missing in the English version of the wikipedia entry, or at least I cannot find it there, but I think they are called "5 point Torx" or "5 point security Torx" or something like that in English.

Regards,

Frank

Sorry, I misunderstood your question! Yes, you have to remove one screw before you can separate the red etalon body from the main black ring (the two parts on the lower left and in the center of the second of the three pictures in my post above). This screw is on the side of the red part, I removed it months ago but cannot find it right now, so I cannot check what type or size it is. I recall that I had to use some force to break the locktite (I think I used a ratchet wrench - bit sets for 5 point Torx are available on ebay, amazon etc.), but otherwise there was nothing unusual about it.

Yes I just now finally managed to take my standard original non-combo Quark Chromosphere apart, the red metal Etalon body and the black metal Telecentric / 4.3x "Barlow" were held together with a TS8 size Torx anti tamper 5 sided (pentalobe) screw that I had to get a screw bit set for (Silverhill brand). I used a 6.3mm hex drive type ratchet screwdriver with handle of about 1.5" diameter in order to have sufficient torque (and I pressed hard into the screw) to be able to undo the screw without stripping the head. The screw was on very tight from the factory, so presumably threadlocked. The black metal bodied "4.3x Barlow" assembly was then easily able to be unscrewed from the red Etalon section. There was no threadlock on the threads joining the red Etalon assembly and black Telecentric together.

I do however find it impossible to separate the black 2" part of the "Barlow" from the black 1.25" part. I even tried a strap wrench but it's on too tight.

Best Regards,
AG

Hi Mark,

If the Telecentric has been taken off how can a new Blocker be before the Telecentric?
Do you mean in place of the Telecentric?

Rod says there is just a red filter at the back end, is that so?

Andrew.
