PST Blocking Filter modification unit by AOKSwiss

Post by nicosolcy »

If of interest to any of you, this http://www.aokswiss.ch/d/zub/adapter/ps ... iegel.html seems interesting as a means to squeeze something more out of a PST quite easily!

Nice! The interesting and new part is the prism with the right thread to screw the BF5 in.

A worthwhile addition to the "PST Mod"....
I wonder if adding this diagonal immediately behind the etalon assembly (as suggested) will provide the optimum 200mm spacing to the focus?

Beat Kohler (owner of AOKSwiss) is pretty responsive to emails. I no longer have a PST, but thought this would be of interest as a quick fix for improving either a stock PST or for mods with it...

I’ve sent an email to Beat asking about the optical length of his rear adaptor.
As we know the standard PST etalon assembly focuses 200mm behind the rear lens.

Beat was very quick with a reply.
I'll post it here for the benefit of the group:

Your right, but most regular refractors have not 200 mm back focus. So the most users will not cut the tube; also because it's not easy and you will made many scratches normally with this..... well it's right, but the original block filter has a diameter of 5 mm and the image seams to be good enough, often better than with the original prism of the PST. Most tube will have about 150 - 160 mm backfocus, the version I made will have a optical length of about 150 mm as it work on most refractors without cutting the tube.

But your right and I have still the normal 2" back adapter allow you to use a bigger block filter unit from Lunt or Coronado which give the longer back focus - if your scope have so much back focus....

So I think is a compromise, but for many users is the better compromise and a step into a better solar observing than with the original lens.

Best wishes
Beat Kohler
