November 29, 2020 ARs and prom + SS vs. DS comparison

Post by Astrophil »

Greetings,

The Sun presented some interesting sights today. The main ARs are still performing well and a spectacular prom was seen to the southeast.
Thin clouds hindered the captures through the 6' Mak.

Phil

Hi Phil,

... and WOW. Excellent images.

Unfortunately when the sun lurked behind the Palmtree the prominence had turned into something les spectacular.

Thanks for the kind comments. I’m glad you liked the images. Sometimes being in the right place at the right time is all it takes.

Franco, contrast, like sharpening, is easy to overdo. I have a tendency to apply too much at times both in capture gamma settings and post processing.

After seeing Christian's Dec. 1 post comparing a single stack to a double stack image I have another example showing the difference. It may be a little crude in comparison to Christian's but it shows the difference, especially the smaller spots.

The single stack image used a Solar Spectrum 0.3 A filter and the double stack added a Quark Combo. I rarely use the double stack setup because it requires high gain and much longer exposure times.

Which do you find most appealing?

Phil

WOW Phil WOW...

I love the contrast of the single stack, but the double stack shows the pure HA chromosphere blanket over the photosphere and really is showing off what HA is with the fibrils, mottling, etc.

Amazing seeing! My seeing has been so poor compared to usual with this cold!

Very best,

Nice comparison Phil. Both excellent images: I kinda like more the single stack, the double stack is more refined but a bit too busy for my personal taste. You are producing pretty stunning images !
