AR2786 | HA, CaK | Discs | Dec 1rst 2020

Post by MalVeauX »

Heya,

Chilly morning today in Florida, windy too, in the 30's F which is really cold for us. Seeing was decent. Transparency was good. But the wind was rather rough. AR2786 still has a gorgeous big spot and lots of wonderful mottling, fibrils and filaments around its area.

A very good set of images indeed Marty. You would have got away with the 8" for Ha first thing looking at the seeing chart. Long may your good seeing prevail!

Thanks Mark,

I was thinking of attempting to use the 8" early setup, but that seeing measurement is only 30 minutes long or so. My seeing went from 0.8" to 1.8~2" in just 30 minutes, sustained. I wish I had a mount capable of holding both my 8" and my 6" frac so that I wouldn't have to swap out scopes, losing some time of my only moments of good sub-arc seeing which lasts minutes in the morning. I have more time in the summer, but in the winter it's a much shorter window. But a new mount just to gain that convenience and bit of time would be over $3k USD, closer to $4k ultimately (CEM60, CGX-L, HDX-110/EQ8) after mounting and counter weights. Sigh! When I think I want to attempt CaK, I leave the SCT off too, simply because it's rotten in near UV anyways, refractors are the best multi-purpose scopes for this after all.

Very best,
