January 7th - A day of Filaments
Good day everyone...
It was a clear, cool day here on Thursday (around -7C while at the scope) and I had an hour to do some imaging before noon hour. The seeing was not very good, but the images came out better than I expected.
The first image is a full disk composite using separate disk and limb images, with the limb inverted. Thsi was imaged through the LS80T/LS75FHa/B1800Ha double stacked solar scope with an ASI174MM camera: The image below is a triple stack using the DSII module as the third etalon: There was little disk activity but numerous filaments were visible as well as a few small proms. The images below were imaged through the modded iStar 150mm OTA/DSII double stack/B1800Ha, with a 3x focal extender and the ASI174MM. This is a multi frame mosaic of the SW quadrant of the disk with several filaments and some limited activity. The mosaic is uneven due to the seeing...I tried to clean it up as best I could : The SE limb had several filaments as well: The final images are of the proms: That's it from Thursday...working on Fridays images now

A mere -7 deg C, Brian..... We complain when it's -1.
Anyhow, despite the seeing conditions these are great images. Nicely done.

Re: January 7th - A day of Filaments
Nice images Brian! Glad you got some sun, that's what i'm hoping for this weekend too.
I'm curious if there's a reason you use the 174 camera for the full disks with the double stack? The 1600 smaller pixels offer much better sampling and would give better resolution.

Re: January 7th - A day of Filaments
Stuart, Mark, and Terry...
Thanks for your comments and feedback on the images...always appreciated
Stuart...our winter has been pretty benign so far, with no major blizzards or super cold days/nights (so far ). We have had snow cover since Christmas day which is nice. El Nino winters tend to have a smaller range on extremes with more frequent warm spells. Late January through the end of February is typically the coldest period, before the longer days and more intense sun start to warm us up again. We haven't had the 'Polar Vortex' yet either, so the -35C nights may not materialize...but, I'm not holding my breath. Travel to a southern climate this winter is not going to happen, so the milder it is the happier Sandy will be
Mark, the ASI1600 is in the works to be tried for full disk solar after I finish rationalizing the solar scopes. For me, the full disks are meant as a reference as to where features are and then image in higher resolution where there are features. The ASI290 would do a nice job but need to mosaic the full disk...seeing isn't my friend most days and I'd sooner have an even lower resolution image than a blotchy higher resolution shot. Just my perspective on it.
Brian

Super images Brian. Such a sweet set up to double stack the LS80 with the LS75Fha.

Rainer, Mark, and Dan...
Always appreciate the feedback...thanks guys
Dan, temps are all relative to what you typically experience. I'd say -7F is cold

Re: January 7th - A day of Filaments
Definitely worth trying. The 75/80 double stack and a 2x barlow when seeing allows would give a nice field of view and near perfect sampling. The fov being the white box.MapleRidge wrote: ↑Sat Jan 09, 2021 3:16 pm Mark, the ASI1600 is in the works to be tried for full disk solar after I finish rationalizing the solar scopes. Re: January 7th - A day of Filaments
Excellent set Brian, I really enjoyed all the close ups of filaments
We too have had snow on the ground since the 27th Dec, most unusual but I think we are going to have some warmer temperatures this week which will shift it. You need to keep Sandy happy though, maybe you could decorate the house with palm trees (I am sure Rainer could donate), drink cocktails and pretend to go to the Caribbean for a week

Mark, I ran some images with the 1600 on Saturday morning. Sill processing but will post later once I get them finished.
