August 5 2021 Observations. Nice proms!
Session time is from 15:04 to 16:09 UTC. The skies are partly cloudy and the seeing is below average. The temperature is 73F ( 22.7C ).
Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 33x, 44.5x and 64x ( Ha )
The most noticeable things today on the Ha solar disc are the prominences. The western limb is littered with them! The NW shows three with the brightest being the northernmost of them. The SW has two hedgerow prom groups. the northernmost of these is really pretty despite the not so great seeing. The proms show quite a bit of detail with the tops spreading and branching out as they grow in height. The southernmost group is nice too with the individual proms a bit closer together. I can also see fainter proms in on the SE limb and some tiny ones on the NE limb.
Filaments are very few today and I really had to look for them. I see three in the SE with one being associated with a disturbance there and another at the SW limb.
I see three obvious plages and two disturbances today. AR12850 lies near the SW limb. The SE shows a bright plage. Two disturbances lie between this bright plage and AR12850 in the SW. The westernmost disturbance contains a thin curved filament. A bi-polar plage lies north of disc center. It's small but easily seen. GONG Cerro Tololo shows a small disturbance near the NW proms but try as I might, I could not see it visually.
The mottles are easily seen across the disc today.
Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm continuum filter. 55x. ( WL )
I can see three areas on the disc at 540nm. AR12850 in the SW is a bright easy faculae. I see no spots or pores within it. I can see 4 pores embedded in faint faculae, almost in a line, in the SE. Just north of disc center I see two large pores where Ha shows a plage. I see what resembles two vague pores between the SE area and the north-central area. SDO shows no pores there. It may be dark granules!??
Despite substandard seeing I can see the solar granulation.
Today I am listening to Beethoven!
Carpe Diem!
James

Hi James,
Thanks for the detailed description. Filaments are practically invisible in my photos today.

Re: August 5 2021 Observations. Nice proms!
For me, observing is much more difficult than taking a photo. When I watch, I feel discomfort and a little pain in my eyes. Perhaps this is a matter of habit.
By the way, did you find an explanation for the "black granules"?

You should not feel eye pain. It makes me wonder if your scope is blocking enough IR. My Coronado SMII90 is bright in single stack but doesn't hurt my eyes. Double stack is considerably less bright. Maybe try double stacking your scope, it may make visual observing more comfortable for you and will reveal more details on the disc.
If you look at any image that shows the granules clearly you can see some are darker than others. They are not all of uniform brightness. While not exactly black some are quite " grey ". My guess is they may be somewhat cooler, maybe preparing to sink back into the photosphere.

Thanks for the answer James.
Pain in my eyes always occurs when I look into any optical device, first discomfort, and then pain. Therefore, I very rarely observe.
About dark granudas, I also thought that they are just colder than the rest.

Re: August 5 2021 Observations. Nice proms!
Quite a long time ago, about six years ago. The day before yesterday I went to the ophthalmologist with my daughter. And while he was examining it, I tried to read the letters in the table, something like a Snellen chart. I realized that my vision had deteriorated
Apparently I need to go for an examination. Thank you, James, for some reason I myself did not attach any importance to this until you paid attention.

Re: August 5 2021 Observations. Nice proms!
Hi Ivan, sorry to read that you have some eye-pain and quite definitely a visit to the eye-clinic/ophthalmologist is a must, as any pain could signify a problem that needs attention.
I had this eye-pain problem in January'20 and immediately my ophthalmologist thought that a serious condition existed in one eye, so immediately arranged an appointment at my local hospital's eye-clinic. Within about an hour, "UVEITIS" was confirmed and an immediate course of medication was required.
The medication as (eye-drops) was a little complicated and lasting a few weeks, but cleared the problem, which itself if left untreated would apparently cause blindness !!
Interestingly that was in my right-eye which itself works fine, but a known Cataract problem in the left-eye for around two-years is awaiting an delayed Cataract-replacement operation - due to COVID, by hopefully will occur soon...
Best Wishes
Terry

Re: August 5 2021 Observations. Nice proms!
I pay close attention to my eyes. Not only are they very important in my everyday activities they are also my primary astronomical detector! When I start getting headaches and start having trouble focusing I know real quick it's time to have my eyes checked. I have worn glasses since I was 4 years old due to astigmatism so I naturally prefer long eye relief eyepieces. Age has also made me farsighted as well. My vision is good as long as I keep my eyeglass prescription up to date.
