15th Dec Solar flare action

Post by JohnW »

15th Dec
I was imaging the Sun this morning at the same time a solar flare was occurring near AR3514. This turned out to be the strongest flare so far for this year - an X2.8 flare. I have posted 3 images - this first shows the location of the sunspots including AR 3514, taken at 540 nm wavelength.
The second image at Ha wavelength (656 nm) shows the region where the flare activity (white) occurred. The third image shows a nice prominence on the Sun's NE limb. All images are single exposures with a Canon 550d camera.
Sky conditions were just fair and the scope was being vibrated by winds.
Thanks for viewing.

John,
I missed that flare by 30 minutes! In your images I notice flaring in AR13517. The spots look really nice in your white light image. That is a nice prom too!!

These are excellent, John. I wish I had a chance to image 3514 in high res, it is pretty awesome.
