Full disk set up

Post by Jimk69 »

Hi ya’ll! I’m very new to solar imaging and was wondering if it is possible to get a full disk image using a Williams Optics 61mm/360mm FL, Ha Daystar Quark and a ZWO174MM? I can only get a half of a disk with my Player One Apollo-M Max Pro. I don’t see a focal reducer available for this scope. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi There and welcome to the forum!

Simple answer, no. I have the same equipment. You can use a reducer on the nosepeice of the camera though.

Welcome.

Pop into AstronomyTools website - https://astronomy.tools/calculators/field_of_view/ - imaging mode, that'll help (probably).

no. a .5 focal reducer screwed onto the camera nosepiece will give you a lot more, especially if you alter the snout length, but probably not a full disk.
The Quark is designed for high focal length use with small field of view.
You can however go to your favorite Telescope outlet and purchase a Lunt or Coronado dedicated solar scope that is designed for full disc imaging. :) you only live once, right? It’s easier to ask forgiveness than permission, remember. :)

Thank you everyone! I was afraid of the answers. It’s not the forgiveness that I worry about. It’s the divorce that would follow! 😂 I’m really enjoying the information on this forum. Thank you all for your speedy responses.

There's nothing wrong with your set up. You're now on the slippery slope, wallet warning....

Full discs are easily obtained (!), by creating mosaics.

Sharpcap has a useful mosaic tool for both the moon and the sun - it took me 18 frames on my setup ( mind it didn't stitch properly, but others have succeeded. Sharpcap might need the Pro version, but cheaper than a new dedicated scope. )
