AR13685 The Movie - 10 hours 33 minutes timelapse with 204mm refractor in H-Alpha 18th of May 2024

Post by arnedanielsen »

Dear friends,

This is by far my biggest timelapse project to date. A total of 1878 recordings was made between 06:41 and 17:14UT on May 18th 2024 under variable conditions. Each recording was 18 seconds long with a framerate of 66fps (1188 frames) and 2 seconds delay between each recording resulting in a total of approx 3,7TB of data.

The recordings where obtained through an iStar Asteria TCR 204-12 R35, with an Altair Astro 115mm TRIBAND H-Alpha D-ERF, Baader 35nm H-Alpha, Baader SunDancer II 3x Telecentric System TZ-3S, DayStar Quantum 0,4å PE and Player One Apollo-M Max mounted on a Sky-Watcher AZ-EQ6 PRO and guided with Hinode SolarGuider.

The best 200 frames from each recording was stacked in AutoStakkert!4 before they were aligned and sharpened in ImPPG. Change in light intensity due to variable transmission and athmospheric distinction was corrected using GBDeflicker. A total of 126 frames had to be tossed due to passing clouds or wind shaking the scope resulting in 1752 fames making it into the final animation which was created using PIPP at 15fps. This effectively compressed the 10 hours 33 minutes of duration down to just 1 minute 56 seconds.

Click on the image to view the timelapse on AstroBin.

Thanks for looking

Best regards,
Arne

Saw this on FB and my jaw dropped. I can’t imagine processing that much data! Great, subtle activity during the entire animation.

Wonderful to see this animation Arne. We get the benefits of watching all that wonderful movement without any of the hard work! My highlights were at 47 seconds on the right at middle height and the final 10 seconds around the big spot. Fascinating.
Thank you
Nic

Arne,
I've not seen too many animations at that magnification let alone duration. So well done!
I've watched this over and over, the activity is absolutely fascinating. Glad you were able to capture and share this.

Fantastic animation :bow :bow

I was wondering whether you could add the time (HH:MN:SS) information on each frame ?
I know Paul (Banjo) has developped a short code for this. Maybe it could make it available to you.

Thank you very much for taking the time to view and comment Simon, James, Stu and Christian! Much appreciated!

Simon: I was very unsure if I was going to buy it as I had no opportunity to test it on beforehand and the transport cost were astronomical. I am however very glad I did take the chance and buy it.

James: When it's clear and I'm home any way it mostly runs by itself... just have to check that everything is working every now and then.

Stu: I had to look that word up! :-) Thanks!

Christian: I will try to have a look into that.

Arne. Extended visual sessions are the same way. You certainly do not stay behind the eyepiece. You check the sun every few minutes and make sure the kit is ok. In between you do other more often needed things. It is a multitasking game.

Arnie...

This is a fabulous animation and I congratulate you for the time and effort to capture and process this amount of data. Well done :bow

You list a 115mm ERF...is the scope reduced to 155mm aperture or is it placed internally but still getting full aperture through it? If you posted more detail on the scope earlier I missed it with the limited time to browse these days :(

There's always "some guy" :-)

I was on vacation in Japan when I stumbled upon the ad. I was considering waiting till I got back home in order to investigate a bit more before deciding, but luckily I didn't! :-)

Thank you very much, Brian!

It's correct that's an Altair Astro 115mm TRIBAND D-ERF. The scope is an open truss tube, making it very easy to place it further down the light cone.
