h-alpha, June 18th, 2023, M class flare
The sky was a bit hazy this afternoon, but the seeing looked good to excellent, good enough certainly to bring out the high resolution gear. I captured AR13333 and AR13338 first.
When I had slewed the scope to AR13335, it immediately started flaring, so I had an hour of lucky imaging - and after that way more data than I could process today. I managed three of the best flare videos at least, taken about half an hour apart:
[edit 2023-06-20: I've added four more images to the sequence, so the development of the flare can be followed over a little more than two hours. I also noted the time stamp of the videos below each image.]
12:38:54
13:22:42
13:32:47
13:44:04
13:51:15
14:20:20
14:53:55
A bit of colour added to the last five:
Finally I tried to find a deep red colour that (more or less) reproduces the dramatic deep red impression of h-alpha light at the eyepiece (even if details are harder to discern in deep red), but after uploading the images to flickr the colour is never what it was before on my screen. My closest attempt so far:
Best regards,
Frank

Great images Frank.
We inadvertently watched the same flare develop in real time - wasn't it impressive!

Superb pictures. Happy day.

Re: h-alpha, June 18th, 2023, M class flare
Very nice series of images, Frank. IMO, the best your results so far.
I hope to see your further progress.
BTW We all don't know what setup were used. Seems to me that you do use a new etalon.

Re: h-alpha, June 18th, 2023, M class flare
Thanks, Filip! The setup is a Mewlon 210, ARIES DERF, Daystar Quantum filter, double-stacked with Lunt LS35.

Re: h-alpha, June 18th, 2023, M class flare
Thanks Arne, Franco, Warren, James, Maurits, Mark, Valery and Aaron!
Valery, longtime users of SolarChat may well know that my high resolution solar scope is a Mewlon 210, equipped with a trusty ARIES DERF, but it can't hurt to mention it once in a while... (Hoping for those who started solar observing and imaging only recently that these quality DERFs hopefully will be available again in the not too distant future!)
My setup actually has not changed since last year. The main etalon is still the Daystar Quantum, double stacked with an LS35. What may have improved a little bit is my processing skills (I am using wavelet sharpening on a regular basis now and I am trying to avoid deconvolution if possible) and my judgment of the local weather conditions and their impact on high res imaging. But most important is probably that in the last months there have been quite a lot days with long stretches of quite good seeing at my location. I hope things go on like that!

Re: h-alpha, June 18th, 2023, M class flare
I edited my original post, adding four more images (plus UT time stamps), so that now the development of the flare over a little more than two hours can be followed.

Frank

Re: h-alpha, June 18th, 2023, M class flare
I didn't knew about this. Seemed to me you do use a new etalon. This is the reason I asked about the imaging rig.
The probability that DERF will be available again is quite slim. All what I can do is to sell the revived filters. Later this
summer.
