Commercial filter tilters

Post by Dennis »

Hi there,

are there any commercial available adapters that have a function for to tilt tune filters? I guess the sky bender device is not available anymore.

Good question Denis ;-)

I've made two units with a 3D printer. They do the job, but an aluminium version would be better. I plan to contact Rafcamera to suggest he makes them.

Yes.. good idea, you probably get your sample for free then at Rafcamera if you give them the drawings. Im looking for a short version with t2 threads ideally.

I’d be interested in t-2 threads as well. The shorter the better.

I bought one of these "Tilt Lens Adapter" just to see what it's like
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07BJ37JR9/

You twist it and it tilts. Simples. £26.
Architecture photographers love a bit of tilt and shift.

Never did anything with it. You just reminded me I bought it !

Late to the solar party - April 2023. Missed 5 cycles. Much to learn. Much to spend.

Boxed for 15 years - Zenithstar 80, Skywatcher 150 f8, Celestron C9.25.
Now all have seen the Sun and demand I spend further, without regret.

I think we have to design sth, but not sure where i could have it machined best / cost effective in aluminium.

hello Dennis.

I have one tilt module, it was made in Germany. I bought it from Oliver Smie, owner of Beloptik.
He doesnt make them himself, may be they come from GreatStar. Oliver and Stefen are friends and work together. Ask one of them!

the core is a T2 tube. inside, a swing between two shaft and an external knob to do the tilt.

    Hello Sebastiien,
The filter tilter looks a great design. Do you have a link for GreatStar as a google search didn't reveal a relevant business.

Thx. Were looking for a tilter that only tilts the filter, so the optical train stays straight ideally.
Apart of that it looks like a nice solution.

I think we have to design sth, but not sure where i could have it machined best / cost effective in aluminium.
Sorry Dennis - I missed this.

It's a smooth sliding scale tilt.
    I'm playing with it now.

The bayonet (Sony E Mount camera side) does rotate in steps. 12 clicks per revolution. No tilt, just for camera rotation.
    E Mount to T / T2 adapters are available.

The barrel with numbers 1..8 rotates smoothly and provides the tilt 0° - 8°.

Lens side is Canon EF. I've an EF to 2" adapter fitted.
I chose the EF version as Canon EF fittings have 54mm internal diameter. I thought I might fit a filter inside.

This tilter measures about 23mm flange to flange.
With the 2" adapter (lens side) it's about 37mm flange to flange.
If I fitted a T2 bayonet adapter (camera side) it would be about 45-50mm flange to flange.

For £26 I was surprised it was metal and not plastic.
This should cost far more. I've bought simple 2" extensions that cost more than this.

If I use both hands to try and tear it apart I can feel about 0.25mm play in it.
Not bad for £26 I suppose.

    Best,
    Ed

The important thing is that the optical train stays straight and only the filter will tilt.

Atm im in contact with Beloptic and they will check if capacities are available to make more of these. Lead times would be 4-6 weeks.
So far i assume these are made to hold a 1" filter with a thickness of 1mm-6mm.

Who would want one or more of those that Sebastien showed in the images? I would like to estimate the demand.

I would possibly get 1 or 2. In my wish list it would also have threads to accommodate filters mounted in SM1 (1.035" x 40) cells. That's how I have most of my 1" filters mounted.

    What is a SM1 cell?

They are filter cells designed for mounting 1" diameter filters, and other 1" diameter optics. Useful given that most empty 1-1/4" filter cells available at astro stores are too big for 1" filters. Unfortunately the SM1 threading is not quite the same as the standard astro 1-1/4" threads, so an adapter is required. But I suppose many people wanting a tilt adjustment are using 1" filters. Of course mounting the filter directly in the tilt mechanism would work, but having the SM1 threads too would be an added convenience I think.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

Ok, i got a positive reply from the company and currently we are talking about an improved version of the old one. Im focusing mainly on a good mechanism for fine tuning the tilt. After we agree on a design production will be a bit slow due to limited capacities for the anodisation afterwards (6-8 weeks for this alone). But since season is basically over i think we can wait a bit.
    Ill keep you updated.
